A building filled with exciting history

From professor’s apartment to student residence to hotel.

The hotel is located in the Billegården district, a name linked to the Danish family Bille and Lund’s long Danish history. The beautiful building was constructed in 1882, the same year and in the same style as the main building of Lund University. The architectural style is known as romantic neoclassicism, featuring lavish facade stuccowork and intricate details.

In the Concordia building, Professor Henrik Schück lived in his grand apartment, and in the neighboring building, August Strindberg conducted chemical experiments in the late 19th century. In addition to his attempts to create gold, Strindberg wrote the plays “Advent” and “Inferno” during this period. Strindberg became friends with Professor Schück, who lived in the corner apartment on the second floor of the hotel building. That is why we refer to the hotel’s grand staircase as Strindbergstaircase, as we know he frequently walked up it during his visits to his friend.

The Concordia building was called “Micklagård” by the city’s students and served as a student dormitory from the 1920s to the 1960s. The name originated from “mickel” or “frimickel,” referring to its association with the free church movement, but it also alluded to the term the ancient Vikings used for Constantinople.

Here, there was also a very popular dining hall where many students ate during their time at university. The diners were known as “hemäter” (home eaters), in contrast to the “hemiter” (residents) who lived at the dormitory. Generations of Lund students enjoyed not only delicious but, above all, affordable and cozy meals here. Among the notable guests were famous politicians, authors, and artists, such as Bo and Margareta Strömstedt and Allan Larsson—so this beautiful cultural building certainly carries both old and new traditions.

Modernization and New Amenities

The hotel has undergone several renovations and expansions, most recently in 2000, when 15 new guest rooms were added. Today, the hotel offers 60 guest rooms, two conference rooms, a breakfast dining room, a gym, and a relaxation area with a sauna (2008). A rooftop terrace with views over Lund’s Stadspark was added in 2012. In 2021, we, Björn Ranelid and Olof Buchard, inaugurated the hotel’s restaurant La Donna Birgitta, named after the hotel’s founder, Birgitta Eriksson.

The hotel was certified with the Nordic Ecolabelled since 2005, and in 2019, we installed our own solar energy system. We continue to actively improve our environmental impact while meeting the modern comfort demands of our guests.
